In an effort to further drive down smoking rates and health risks related to smoking, an Australian senator says the country’s Tobacco Advertising Prohibition Amendment Bill 2010, which bans tobacco advertising on TV, radio, film and in print, should be applied to the internet. Citing preventive health benefits that would arise from more aggressive tobacco control, senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells told Australia’s largest daily newspaper, the Herald Sun, that the proposal would not ban sales of tobacco products online, only advertising of those products.
