Maine Town Relying on Peer Pressure to Enforce Beach Smoking Ban

According to Portland, Maine’s local WMTM TV station, a smoking ban at beaches and other public areas that will go into effect in the city of South Portland in a few weeks is reliant on voluntary compliance from smokers and enforcement from the public.
Nearby towns like Ogunquit and Saco have banned smoking at their beaches and use public signs and hand out cards in parking lots to prevent smoking. "I think littering maybe you should get a $50 fine, but lighting up a cigarette… that's wrong," said Eddie Johnson, who told WMTM he opposes the ban. Under the ordinance, smokers can be fined $50 for lighting up, but town officials say that will only happen if the person refuses to stop smoking when asked to.
