Smoking Bans Are No "Magic Bullet" for West Virginia

According to West Virginia’s Charleston Gazette, the state’s indoor smoking bans haven't moved the needle on West Virginia's smoking rates. Statistics provided by the state show that 25.4 percent of state residents polled said they smoked regularly in 2009, compared to 25.8 percent in 1995. During that time period, 20 counties adopted smoking bans.
Bruce Adkins, director of West Virginia’s Division of Tobacco Prevention, told the Gazette that “smoking ordinances aren't a magic bullet,” pointing to high smoking rates in counties with restrictive ordinances in place and counties that are very relaxed about smoking regulations that have low smoking rates.
